About Us

Shamgar Ministries was founded by Rusty and Denise Stewart of Cochran, Georgia. After  12 years in the pastorate we felt God calling us to ministries outside the walls of the church to reach out to the unreached not only in our community  but in surrounding communities and wherever God leads. In September of 2009 we were appointed by the North American Mission Board as Mission Service Corps volunteers to develop Shamgar Ministries. We have given everything that we have to God as Shamgar did with his ox goad and expecting God to “do exceedingly abundantly more than we could ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20) to His glory.

The main focus of Shamgar Ministries is to minister to widows and orphans as instructed in James 1:27.

This verse reads, “Pure and undefiled religion before God the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and the widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.” The Bible has much to say about widows and orphans. From the Old Testament to the New the evidence is clear that God holds these two groups very dear to His heart. Fatherless or orphan is defined as a child permanently bereaved of or abandoned by his or her parents. In the New Testament the Greek word “orphanos” is used figuratively for one without a teacher, guide, or guardian. Widow is defined as a woman who has lost her husband to death. It is also a term that is used to identify a woman who has been abandoned by her husband. Religion does not mean ritual or tradition. Religion is the outward practice of inward belief: what we inwardly believe about God. Visit means to look after, provide help for or take care of, which demands personal contact. Affliction means suffering, trouble, hardship, and/or distress. In a modern translation James 1:27 would read: Behavior that pleases God the Father must be completely pure. You must take care of widows and orphans who are suffering and don’t let the world contaminate you. We desire to organize ministry that exemplifies James 1:27 through organizing  and leading volunteers, assisting other churches, and personally investing in the lives of  widows and orphans wherever  and however God leads.

Shamgar is a faith-based donor supported ministry and a non-profit 501c3 organization. All gifts and financial contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law.
